Description
Little Downham War Memorial is a First World War memorial that also includes names added after the Second World War. It is made of limestone, possibly Clipsham.
The memorial features a stone wheel-head cross fleury that rises from the collar of a slender cross shaft, which is octagonal in section. A shield is carved on both the front and rear faces of the collar, with the front displaying the monogram IHS. The cross shaft is set on a small, shouldered pedestal that is square in plan, which in turn rests on a two-step octagonal plinth.
The base of the memorial has a clear incised inscription that reads: “TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE/ WHO WENT OUT FROM THIS PARISH/ AND LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR US/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.” The names of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the pedestal, while the names of those from the Second World War are inscribed on the plinth, along with the dates “1939 – 1945.”
