Description
The Mond Laboratory is a building constructed in 1932 by H.C. Hughes, designed as a laboratory. It is made of white brick laid in Flemish bond and features a flat roof that is not visible. The structure is L-shaped and has two storeys. At the external angle, there is a full-height circular staircase and an entrance tower. The entrance includes late 20th-century metal glazed doors set within a glazed tiled surround. Above the doors, there is a two-light metal casement window, with a single-light casement window to the right. To the left of the doors, three single-light casements step up following the rise of the internal staircase. The parapet is constructed of bricks laid on edge and features an incised crocodile motif to the left, created by Eric Gill.
There is a wing running east that has a two-window range with three-light metal casements, along with a range of clerestory windows on the south side. A wing running south includes one similar casement. The windows are set under wide concrete lintels that extend beyond the windows as decorative courses. A later 20th-century single-storey laboratory building is attached to the south. Inside, there is a concrete staircase within a partly open well.
