Description
This is a terrace of six houses at numbers 8 to 18, Maid's Causeway, and number 20. Built in the early 19th century between 1815 and 1826, they are part of Charles Humfrey’s Doll’s Close development, which also includes buildings on Short Street, Fair Street, and Willow Walk. The houses are constructed of gault brick with slate roofs to the attics. They are symmetrically designed with three windows on the front elevation of each house. A stone band runs at the level of the first-floor window sills, and a small moulded wooden cornice sits below the parapet. The windows originally contained glazing bars, but these are now missing from numbers 8 and 12. Each house has a doorcase with panelled pilasters and a small pediment, leading to a four-panelled door. Number 12 features a plaster porch with Doric columns and an entablature. Numbers 18 and 20 present the appearance of a single house but have always been a pair. Numbers 4 to 20 (even) are considered part of a group value with number 1 Fair Street and number 1 Short Street.
