Description
The School of Pythagoras, located at the south end of Merton Hall, dates from the late 12th century or early 13th century. This two-storey building is constructed of stone rubble with Barnack dressings and has a modern tile roof. It is a rectangular structure that was likely originally built as a manor house, featuring a vaulted undercroft and a hall on the upper floor. Although the original vault of the undercroft has been replaced with a modern floor, some old windows from various periods and a few original buttresses still remain. The building has undergone significant alterations, with many of its original features being mutilated, refaced, or rebuilt. Despite these changes, it is notable as one of the very few surviving domestic buildings from this period in the country.
