Description

No. 28 is a late 18th/early 19th century dwelling and commercial premises, now a house. The building is weatherboard over a timber frame, built upon a brick plinth, and has a gabled slate roof with a brick ridge stack. It is two stories high with a basement set into the slope of Leigh Hill. The 2-window front is symmetrical. There are square-headed doorways on the lower gable end and the east elevation. Early 19th century twelve-pane sash windows are set within moulded wood architraves. Replacing original loading doors are similar 20-pane sashes to the upper (north) gable end. The interior reveals exposed timber framing with straight primary bracing and a roof with lodged side purlins. A former workshop is situated above a stable/loosebox at the north end. It represents an unusual survival of a building type once common in riverside fishing and shipbuilding communities.
