Description
The Tomb of Mary Ellis, located in St Clement's Church, is a chest tomb dedicated to her memory, dating from 1609.
The tomb features a limestone slab resting on a red brick base constructed in English bond. It is oriented on an east to west axis and is situated south of the church's south porch.
This simple structure consists of approximately nine courses of English bond brickwork forming the base. The limestone slab is unadorned and has worn edges, likely due to the sharpening of blades over time.
On the north side of the brick base, there is a plaque that was added around 1970. The inscription reads: "HERE LIES THE BODY OF MARY ELLIS / DAUGHTER OF THOMAS AND LIDIA ELLIS / OF THIS PARISH / SHE WAS A VIRGIN OF VIRTUOUS COURAGE / AND VERY PROMISING HOPE / AND DIED ON THE 3RD OF JUNE 1609 / AGED ONE HUNDRED AND NINETEEN."
