Description
The Deanery Gateway and wall, dating from the early 16th century, were built by Abbot Kirkton and feature his rebus. The structure includes a wide stone archway with a narrower arch for foot passengers to the right, alongside a wall made of coursed stone that has a moulded cornice and an ashlar parapet to the left. The main arch is adorned with richly carved heraldic panels and foliated panels below, while the spandrels of the arch display a carved representation of the See and Chapter. The lower arch is constructed from coursed rubble with stone dressings and a cornice, and both arches feature crenellated parapets. The Deanery Gateway and wall, along with the Prior's Gate, No 12, stables, and wall to Prior's Gate, form a group of significant historical structures.
