Description
Diocesan House is a Grade I listed building located in the precincts of Peterborough. It has origins in the 14th century but was largely altered in the mid-19th century. The structure is mainly constructed of rubble and features a crenellated parapet with crossed arrowslits and a modillion cornice. An external chimney is positioned at the front of the building.
The front facade includes two windows with arched heads, each featuring a dripmould, a four-light transom, and mullions, with the top lights having cusped heads. The ground floor has one window, which is a four-light stone mullion with a flat dripmould and shield stops. A 19th-century gabled ashlar porch is present, with a doorway that has a dripmould and double doors. To the left, there is a tower with small irregular windows and a stepped buttress on the side. On the ground floor, there is a large arched recess that is the remains of a former doorway or window, which has a small later window with a dripmould inserted. The rear elevation likely has origins from the 16th century. Diocesan House is part of a group that includes Nos 24 to 28 (consecutive), Bishop's Gate, and King's Lodging.
