Description
The Bishop's Palace in Peterborough, originally the Abbot's House, is a Grade I listed building. The main structure is primarily in the Victorian Gothic style, but it incorporates features from various periods. Notably, two mid-13th century undercrofts remain, with the larger one consisting of two naves supported by circular piers that have moulded capitals. The smaller undercroft also features rib vaulting and an original slit lancet window in the east wall, along with a stepped buttress. The solar wing is at a right angle to the Hall wing and includes two late perpendicular oriel windows facing north, one of which displays the rebus of Abbot Kirkton. This room is referred to as the Heaven's Gate Chamber. Additionally, a triple shaft on a corbel from the late 12th century is a remnant of the Monk's kitchen.
