Description

The Robin Hood and Little John Stones are located off Ferry Hill in Castor. These stones were likely erected to mark a toll-free route for transporting Barnack stone to Gunwade Ferry, where it was shipped via the River Nene for the construction of Bury St Edmund's Abbey. The stones feature arrowhead nicks at the top, which are said to commemorate St Edmund. According to tradition, Robin Hood and Little John shot arrows to these spots, although no actual arrowhead markings have been found. The site is designated as a Scheduled Monument.
