Description

King's Lodging, which includes Abbot's Prison, is a Grade I listed building located in the precincts of Peterborough Cathedral. Originally built in the late 12th century, it has undergone later alterations. The building features a two-storey and basement elevation made of ashlar stone, topped with a crenellated parapet and an external chimney stack. On the ground floor, there is a large transom and mullion window, a round arched doorway accessed by steps, and a round arched window. The elevation facing Galilee Court is constructed of stone and has a Welsh slate roof. The left section of the front elevation was rebuilt in the 19th century and includes a plinth, one 19th-century window, and two windows separated by a buttress.

Inside, there is a late 12th-century room with short circular piers and slightly chamfered arches and ribs, currently used as a bookshop and situated below ground level. To the west, at ground level, is a room featuring a 13th-century vault, and beyond this is a late 12th-century room with two bays, which has been partly rebuilt. A small room near the Great Gate, known as the Condemned cell, contains a blocked 12th-century window, through which runs a fine bar-hole of the gate. King's Lodging, along with Nos 24 to 26 (consecutive) Bishop's Gate, forms a group, and it also groups with No 3 Bridge Street and No 41 Causeway.
