Description
The Midland Bank, located at Nos 1 & 3 Cathedral Square in Peterborough, was built in 1902, as noted on the rainwater head. This two-storey building with attics is constructed in ashlar and features a slate mansard roof adorned with three gabled dormers and a balustraded parapet. A cupola sits at the corner, designed with plain half-columns and triangular pediments, and is octagonal in shape, topped with a weathervane. The building has a heavy modillion eaves cornice and displays three blank cartouches above three windows with glazing bars. The façade features gibbon rustication with a triple keystone, and the ground floor has three round-arched windows with keystones and modern glazing, framed by half columns, with the bank's name displayed on the entablature. Full-height pilasters mark the ends of the building.
No 3 is part of the bank premises and serves as a sympathetic modern extension. No 2 Bridge Street is also part of the bank building and has a similar elevation, featuring two windows on the first floor and one on the ground floor. The doorway in the quoin is dated 1836, though it is likely from a later date, and is round-arched with female supports beneath a cartouche and a three-light window with half-columns and a pediment. The building is noted for its prominent position and its contribution to the visual group of properties in Cathedral Square.
