Description
No. 8 Cathedral Square is a three-storey, half-timbered building dated 1911, noted for its curiosity value. It features three gables with finials that display three local coats of arms and pargetted plasterwork above two canted bays of six lights, which have wood transoms and mullions, as well as rounded bays on the first floor beneath pentice tile roofs. The most striking aspect of the front is five brightly-painted statues in niches: Athelwold, Bishop of Winchester, is positioned above Prince Rupert and King Peada, who flank a central statue of Henry VIII. To the right, there is an octagonal turret with two storeys and a candle-snuffer roof. The ground floor is fully occupied by a modern shop front. This building, when viewed alongside the Old Guild Hall, contributes to a visually interesting group.
