Description
The building consists of stables with forecourt railings, service wings, a servants wing, a brewery, and a porters lodge, located in St Martins Without Burghley Park. These stables were constructed between 1756 and 1778 by Capability Brown, whose master plan for Burghley, dated 1756, includes the stables, with the final account recorded in 1779. The stables feature a Gothic design, constructed of ashlar with a Collyweston stone hipped roof behind battlements. The structure is two storeys high and has nine bay ranges on three sides of a courtyard, with the central bays slightly advanced and featuring pointed arch carriageways. The windows are two-light with four-centred arch lights and drip moulds, and there is a moulded string course at floor level. The forecourt is enclosed by railings on a stone plinth, with square ashlar gate piers at the center and cast iron lamp standards. The servants wing, which connects the stables to the main house, is a two-storey and attic range from the 17th century, featuring mullion and transom windows and hipped dormers, with an arched gateway leading to the yard to the north. There are also later adjoining ancillary wings, the service wings, from the 17th century and later, which include the brewery and porters lodge around the courtyard.
