Description
The Maxey and Deeping Gate War Memorial is a First World War memorial that includes a later addition for the Second World War. It is made of stone and is situated on the west side of the church of St Peter.
The memorial features a floriated cross with a hexagonal shaft, standing on a rectangular plinth that has a concave chamfer. This plinth is supported by a two-stepped hexagonal base made of roughly dressed coursed stone. The north face of the plinth bears the inscription, "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF MAXEY AND DEEPING GATE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The south face features the inscription, "O GRAVE WHERE IS THY VICTORY?" while the east and west faces list the names of the fallen. Additionally, on the north side, resting between the two steps of the base, is a stone tablet that reads, "ALSO IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF ALEC MCSHANE WHO GAVE HIS LIFE FOR HIS COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-45."
