Description
This is a K6 telephone kiosk, standardised in design and dating from the 20th century. It was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee, evolving from his earlier K2 design. This K6 is constructed of cast iron and is painted red overall, featuring long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. Applied crowns decorate the top panel, and rectangular white display signs read "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow-curved roof. Modern internal telecommunications equipment has been installed. The kiosk is in good condition.
It is situated at the east end of the village and has a strong visual relationship with nearby listed buildings: Primrose Cottage on the opposite side of the street, Elizabethan Cottage approximately 25 metres to the north east, and Keepers Cottage approximately 30 metres to the south east.
The K6 represented a more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective design than its predecessor, and over 70,000 were produced before being largely replaced in the 1960s. It is considered a milestone of 20th-century industrial design and a thoughtful adaptation of architectural tradition to technological needs.
