Description

The Manor House is a late 16th-century building that was originally the manor house of Sir Robert Wingfield. In 1625, it was sold to Sir William Dove, the son of Bishop Dove of Peterborough, and the Dove family held the manor until 1750, when it was sold to Lord Fitzwilliam. The structure is built from coursed stone and features a steeply pitched Collyweston stone roof with stone coping at the gable ends. It is two storeys tall and has three windows across its front.

On the first floor, there are three 2-light and 3-light ovolo moulded stone mullion windows, each with dripmolds. The ground floor has two three-light stone mullion windows with four-centred, arch-headed lights and dripmoulds, along with leaded pane casement windows. The central entrance features a four-centred arch doorway with a dripmould and depressed spandrels. The house has ashlar end and off-centre chimney stacks, also with dripmoulds. At the rear, there is a small 18th or 19th-century wing.

This house is notable as the birthplace of James Harington (or Harrington), who lived from 1611 to 1677. He was the author of the political romance "The Commonwealth of Oceana," published in 1656, and the founder of the Rota Club in 1659-60.
