- 5141 UPTON TF 10 SW 10/669 15.12.55 Manor House II GV 2. Remaining part of the late C16 manor house of Sir Robert Wingfield who sold it in 1625 to Sir William Dove son of Bishop Dove of Peterborough. The Doves held the manor until 1750 when it was sold to Lord Fitzwilliam. Coursed stone range with steeply pitched Collyweston stone roof with stone coping to gable ends. Two storeys. Three window range. First floor, three 2-light and 3-light ovolo moulded stone mullion windows with dripmolds. Ground floor, 2 three-light stone mullion windows with four-centre, arch headed, lights and dripmoulds. Leaded pane casement windows. Central four-centred arch doorway with dripmould and depressed spandrels. Ashlar end and off centre chimney stacks with dripmoulds. Small C18/19 wing at rear. Birthplace of James Harington (or Harrington) 1611-77, the author of the political romance "The Commonwealth of Oceana" published 1656, and founder of the "Rota Club 1659-60. VCR Northants. Vol II.
