Description
The stables adjoining the east of Milton Hall, dated 1690, are possibly designed by William Talman or John Sturges. Talman provided advice on building offices and proposed the rebuilding of Milton Hall for the first Earl Fitzwilliam in 1688. The stables are constructed from coursed stone with freestone dressings, forming three sides of a courtyard. They feature a hipped Collyweston stone roof with a modillion eaves cornice, rusticated quoins, and a stringcourse. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a façade of four bays in the center that breaks forward, topped with a pediment containing an elliptical light and the date 1690. The central doorway is adorned with a segmental pediment. The windows are cross mullion/transom style, with architraves that have straight heads and keyblocks. The dormers alternate between triangular and segmental pediments. A central clock turret is topped with pediments and a cupola. The wings consist of four and six bays, featuring ashlar ridge stacks with cornices. The old kitchen quarters on the ground floor are notable for their stone vaulted ceilings.
