Description
Newborough War Memorial, created by Messrs John Thompson and Co of Peterborough, is located on the east edge of the churchyard of St Bartholomew, facing the street. Metal gates, which are not listed, provide direct access from the pavement to the memorial. The square base of the memorial is slightly set back from the gates. At the center of the base is a square plinth topped with a bold, plain cross. The top of the east face features a crown in relief, with a green wreath below it encircling the words: IN MEMORY OF NEWBOROUGH AND BOROUGH FEN HEROES WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY DURING THE WAR 1914 – 1918. An inscription added after the Second World War at the base of the cross reads: GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAN TO LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS, along with the dates 1939 – 1945 and the names of seven individuals. The names of 25 people who died in the First World War are inscribed on the east face of the cross shaft, situated between the inscriptions for the two world wars.
