Description
Fairfax House is a late 17th century to early 18th century house located at No. 31 Riverside in Deeping Gate. It is constructed of coursed stone rubble and features a steeply pitched new tile roof with coped gable ends. The house has two storeys and an attic, with a three-bay front. The first floor has small 19th century sash windows without glazing bars, each with chamfered timber lintels. On the ground floor, there are two canted stone bay windows from the 19th century, along with a plain central doorway that has a modern hood and a glazed door. The house also has three new hipped dormers and end stacks with cornices. At the rear, there is a wing that forms an L-shaped plan. This house was the home of the Fairfax family. It is noted that there is no trace of St Mary's Chapel, which was once located on this site.
