Description
Clare House is an 18th-century cottage located on Church Street in Northborough. It is said to have been built in 1823 for the poet John Clare, although it was actually an existing cottage given to him around that time by Fitzwilliam. Clare resided in the cottage for ten years. The building is constructed of coursed stone rubble with a thatched roof, featuring brick coped gable ends. It is one storey high with an attic. The front facade has a three-window range, with 2-light casement windows dating to the 19th century, although the central window is modern. An attic window is set within the thatch at eaves level. Brick chimney stacks are present at the ends of the building. A single-storey, flat-roofed stone lean-to extension is attached to the west end.
