Description

Lolham Bridges is a series of five 17th and 18th century bridges located on King Street, which is a branch of Ermine Street, built on the site of a Roman causeway. One of the bridges features a tablet with the inscription: "These several bridges were built at the general charge of the whole County of Northampton in the year 1652." The bridges were restored in 1721.

Starting from the south end, the southernmost bridge is constructed of ashlar and has four round arches with stop-chamfered edges, three cutwaters with refuges on the upstream (west) side, and a parapet with saddle-back coping. The second bridge is similar but has three arches without chamfers and features buttresses with set-offs between the arches on the east side. There is a cutwater on the west side with an inscription and the date 1642, along with another dated 1916, indicating a repair.

The third bridge is also similar, with three arches without chamfers, and the center arch includes a keystone, with buttressing on the east side. The fourth bridge has a single arch without chamfers and is buttressed on the east side, lacking cutwaters or refuges. The northernmost (fifth) bridge has two chamfered arches, one cutwater on the west side, and buttresses with set-offs on the east side.
