Description

CHAPEL STREET 1. 5123 No 9 (The Griffin Public House) TL 0921 2/33 II

  1. Early C19 public house with high quality brick detailing. Mainly of grey brick with red brick dressings, Welsh slate roof. Three storeys. Three window bay facade. The outer windows to first and second floor are set in recesses with semi-circular arched heads. The windows themselves are arched double-hung sashes with glazing bars and lighter red brick heads. In the central bay the second floor has a blind window set in its own recess. The first floor has a flush dummy window with arched head. The ground floor has a simple projecting timber fascia. The doorway and windows are flanked by simple pilasters. The latter have fine glazing bars. Projecting wrought-iron inn sign attached to centre bay at first floor level. Some cobblestones remain to front of public house. Side elevation has 2 round-headed windows: upper smaller one with glazing bars similar to front elevation; lower larger one has modern sash.
