Description
No. 23 Church Street is a late 17th century, L-shaped, two-storey house built of red brick in English bond, featuring purple brick dressings for the quoins, windows, and a string course between the floors. The house has a deep wooden cornice at the eaves, which sit below a steep tiled roof. It has four sash windows, with two 18th century shallow bay windows added to the ground floor, constructed in a redder brick using Flemish bond and featuring three-light windows. The corresponding two windows on the first floor also have three lights, while a fourth window has been bricked up in Flemish bond. Below this bricked-up window is a carriageway enclosed by doors that retain bold 17th century fielded panelling. An 18th century four-fielded, two-flush panelled door with a delicate fanlight and a rubbed red brick arch has been added. Nos. 1 to 39 (odd) and the Court House form a group with No. 127 Dunstable Street.
