Description
The Hawking Party Statue, located 150 meters south of The Orangery, features a rectangular pedestal made of Ketton stone, with the statue likely carved from Portland stone. The pedestal is set on a plinth that has a low ogee mould along the top edge, projecting at each corner to support large moulded brackets adorned with bead decoration on the lower, curved facing edge. The sides of the pedestal have rebated panels with scotia at the corners, and a thin moulding runs through the upper part of the fascia, creating a frieze. The entire structure is topped with a projecting cap that has a broad torus moulding along the edge.
The statue, created by Smith, depicts a stallion in motion, with its front left leg raised and its head tilted to the right. Its rear right leg is positioned forward, and its tail, carved from a separate piece of stone, sweeps around its right flank. Farrell's additions include a woman riding side saddle, gazing upwards, with her legs on the left side of the horse, seated on a richly draped saddle. She is dressed in a hat and gloves, with her right hand raised and a hawk perched on her left. To the right of the horse stands an adult male attendant, wearing boots, a hat, and a belted tunic. He leans back with his right leg forward, pointing ahead with his left hand. To the left of the horse is a younger page, similarly attired, holding his cap at his left side. His raised right arm clasps the haunch of the horse as he looks upwards.
