Description
Nos. 4 to 7 in Market Place is a late 18th-century house that has been converted for commercial use on the ground floor. The building is made of red brick, with a colourwashed render on the basement, and features a shallow hipped slate roof. It has four storeys above a basement.
The front elevation showcases two full-height shallow canted bays. Each bay on the ground floor has two round-headed windows, with semi-circular arches made of gauged brick and brick keystones. The first floor features one Venetian window in each bay, characterized by slender engaged columns at the outer edges, paired reeded pilasters separating the three lights, and ornamental wood valances above the central lights. The second floor windows resemble those on the first floor, but the central lights are square-headed and topped with curving-sided triangular pediments. The third floor windows are similar to the first floor but are square-headed and located directly under the eaves. All windows are sashes with Gothick pointed-arched glazing bars.
The central entrance has a semi-circular headed doorway with a narrow moulded architrave and plain reveals, framed by engaged Doric columns that support a simple entablature with a cornice hood. The entrance features a five-panel door, with the top panel being glazed and decorated with diamond pattern glazing bars, and a semi-circular fanlight with pointed-arched glazing bars similar to the windows. Brick bands run at the impost level of the ground floor windows and at the first and second floor levels. The building has a moulded timber deep eaves cornice, and the doorway is flanked by plain cast iron railings that extend to the outer angles of the building, enclosing the basement area.
