Description

London Lodge, gateway, and walls are an entrance structure built between 1805 and 1810 for John 6th Duke of Bedford, associated with Woburn Abbey. It is located on the boundary between the parishes of Milton Bryan and Potsgrove. The design is attributed to either a collaboration between Henry Holland and Humphry Repton or a concept by Holland inspired by Repton's ideas. The materials used include ashlar, partly Totternhoe clunch, and partly Portland stone, with carving by Lancelot Wood.

The structure is concave and approximately 100 meters wide, featuring a central gateway flanked by symmetrical stretches of tall curved walls. A lodge cottage is integrated into the left-hand wall, with a small sash window cut into it. The gateway consists of a tall central carriage arch flanked by smaller pedestrian arches, all with semi-circular heads and containing cast iron gates with lattice panels. Between and beside the arches are four giant order Ionic columns on pedestals, with an entablature that breaks forward over the columns. The center of the entablature features a rectangular panel with a carved relief of the Bedford achievement of arms, indicating the completion date of 1810. This panel is flanked by pilasters aligned with the columns below and adorned with carved volutes. Above this is a smaller panel with a carved crest, also flanked by volutes. The gateway is flanked by two rectangular blocks, with the lower parts of these and the gateway being rusticated. The walls terminate near the road in rectangular blocks similar to those flanking the gateway, and the walling consists of panels separated by rusticated pilasters, with eleven on each stretch of wall.
