Description

SP 9630-9730 MILTON BRYAN LONDON ROAD (B528) 12/61 - Gates, gatepiers and walls at Milton Lodge GV II Entrance gateway to Battlesden House (now demolished). Probably part of work carried out 1860-1868 by G H Stokes (advised by Sir Joseph Paxton) for Sir Edward Page-Turner. Red brick with ashlar dressings, the gates of cast iron. Consists of central double gates flanked by single gates, these supported by 4 piers, and linked to outer piers on road edge by symmetrical lengths of curving wall. The 6 piers each stand approximately 2.5 metres high, the walls approximately half of this height. Each stretch of wall approximately 10 metres long. Piers are rusticated with ashlar blocks and have heavily moulded cornices. Those adjoining walls shave heavily moulded ashlar consoles at junction. Walling is stone-coped, and brickwork arranged in an ornamental pierced design simulating balusters. The ironwork gates have ornamental cresting, that to central gates including initials E.P.T.
