Description
The stableblock and coachhouse at Old Warden Park, built between 1875 and 1878 by Henry Clutton for Joseph Shuttleworth, is now converted to domestic accommodation. It features yellow brick with stone dressings, although the east elevation was rebuilt in the 20th century using red brick. The building has clay tile roofs and is designed in a U-plan, consisting of one storey and attics, with rectangular turrets at the two internal angles. There is an archway at the center of the east block and another archway/tower at the west end of the south wing, reflecting a loosely French Gothic style.
The southwest archway/tower has a square plan, is one storey with attics, and includes angle buttresses, a pierced parapet, and a hipped, almost pyramidal roof. It features a round-headed archway and a semi-octagonal stair turret to the west, which has a three-light mullioned window at the top stage and a pyramidal roof with wrought iron finials.
The east archway has a courtyard elevation with a projecting gable, flanked by buttresses on either side of a segmental arched opening. Above the opening, there is a plank door flanked by single lights, with a three-light window above. In line with this is a circular bellcote topped with a sprocketed conical roof on timber arcading, along with a wrought iron weathervane. The south and east wings have 20th-century windows, while the rest of the building features mullioned or mullion and transom windows.
