Description
The Houghton Conquest War Memorial is a granite structure designed as a broken circular column, which stands on a simple base and rectangular plinth. The plinth rises from a single-step base, all set within a small kerbed square that has a gravel covering. At the base of the column, there is a small niche that was originally meant to hold a bronze statue of St George. Although the original statue is lost, a replacement created by the sculptor Philip Jackson was installed in 2000. The names of the fallen soldiers and their regiments are inscribed in black lettering around the sides of the plinth, with the name of a casualty from the Korean War inscribed on the plinth step.
On the eastern face of the plinth, an inscription in black lettering reads: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOREVER'. The memorial records sixteen names of those who fell in the First World War, nine from the Second World War, and one from the Korean War.
