Description

The garden wall to Houghton House dates from the 17th century and originally enclosed the walled garden, which measures approximately 70 by 50 yards. It is constructed of brick in English bond. The top of the wall was originally stepped at intervals, with several courses at a time, to follow the slope of the ground. There are traces of taller and thicker piers that marked each step, although later alterations have filled in the triangular spaces formed by each step, resulting in a uniformly sloping ridge that runs parallel to the hill. The garden wall and the lodge piece at Houghton House form a group.
