Description
The Parish Church of St Andrew is a Grade I listed building dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The nave and chancel were built in the 14th century, while the aisles, west tower, and south porch were added in the 15th century. The interior has been restored and reseated twice in the 19th century. Notable features include a brass memorial to Sir Nicolas Harvey, who attended Queen Catherine at Ampthill Castle in 1532, and marble monuments from 1672 and 1681 dedicated to Richard Nicolls of Ampthill Park, who captured New Amsterdam in 1664 and renamed it New York. There is also a marble column, believed to be ancient Roman, placed in the chancel on an inscribed pedestal dedicated to the Second Earl of Upper Ossory, who lived from 1745 to 1818. The church is part of a group with Nos 24 and 26, as well as Nos 34 and 36, and the Little Dynevor Nos 1 to 7 (consecrated) Feoffee Almshouses on Church Street.
