Description

The ruins of Houghton House, located in Houghton Park, are the remnants of a grand house built by John Thorpe in 1615. Inigo Jones made alterations around 1620. Later work by Christopher Wren and John Chambers was spread throughout the surrounding area after the house was dismantled in 1794. Notably, an oak staircase from the house is now in the Swan Hotel in Bedford. The site is currently under the control of the Department of the Environment. For further details, refer to the Victoria County History, pages 289-290.
