Description
26 Church Street is a timber-framed building that dates from the 17th century or earlier, featuring an 18th-century brick front and a pair of early 19th-century shopfronts.
The building is constructed with timber framing, has a brick frontage, and is topped with a plain clay tiled roof. The overall plan is rectilinear with extensions at the rear.
The exterior showcases a blue-red brick front with red brick detailing on the quoins and upper windows. A pedimented Roman Doric doorway is set above three steps and leads to a six-panel door, which has four fielded panels and two flush panels, along with oblong fanlights that include glazing bars. The doorway is framed by reeded pilasters, paterae, a reeded frieze, and a cornice. On either side of the door, there are early 19th-century three-light shopfronts, each featuring panelled Doric pilasters and entablatures, along with slender glazing bars. The first floor has three architrave windows and a wooden dentil cornice.
The right side, or south elevation, jetties out and is rendered, containing a small square window. The later rear wing is mostly brick with some timber framework, while the back elevation of the main block features a timber frame with some colour-washed brick nogging.
