Description
24 High Street South is a timber-framed building that dates back to the 17th century or earlier. It was refronted in the 19th century and features a shop front from the 20th century.
The building is constructed with timber framing, brick cladding, and is topped with a red plain tile roof. It has a rectilinear plan, with a hipped range that has its ridge parallel to the east elevation (High Street South) and a projecting shop front. At the rear (Middle Row), there are double-pile gabled ranges and an additional projecting shopfront extension.
The building stands two storeys tall. The High Street South elevation features a hipped roof and is primarily brick, with the first floor rendered. There are two flush three-light sash windows on the first floor. The ground floor has a projecting shop front with an offset, recessed door and a tiled recess.
On the rear elevation (Middle Row), there are two gabled ranges with the gable ends facing Middle Row. The southern gable includes a tall brick chimney stack, and both gable ends are rendered and white-washed. The left (north) gabled range has a large 20-light window, while the right (southern) gable features a door with a 12-light window next to it. Additionally, there is a deep, projecting single-storey flat-roofed range at the ground floor, built in brick laid in Flemish bond, with a central timber and glass door flanked by symmetrical, curved shop windows.
