Description
The North Gatepier, which is part of a pair adjacent to Lion Lodge, is a Grade II* listed structure located in Woburn Park. This gatepier is approximately 10 meters north of its counterpart. The lower section is believed to date from the mid-18th century, while the upper part is from the late 18th century. It is made of ashlar stone and stands about 3 meters tall. The substantial rectangular pier features vermiculated rustication on the lower two-thirds. The upper third consists of an entablature, which includes a Greek key band on the architrave, carved swags on the west and east sides of the frieze, and paterae on the north and south sides of the frieze, topped with a moulded cornice. At the top, there is a Coade stone statue of a recumbent lion, which faces south towards the road and the other gatepier.
