Description
The Shillington War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone and is situated in the Memorial Garden on High Road, next to the village hall.
The memorial features a wheel-head Celtic cross with a central boss and relief-carved knot work on the head, which is mounted on a tapering shaft that rises from a plinth on a square base. The names and inscriptions are displayed in recessed panels on three sides of the plinth, with the lettering painted in black.
The west face of the plinth has the inscription: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF SHILLINGTON/ WHO FOUGHT AND DIED FOR/ THEIR KING AND COUNTRY/ DURING THE GREAT WARS/ 1914 – 1918/ 1939 – 1945," followed by the names of the fallen from the Second World War. The north and south faces of the plinth list the names of those who fell in the First World War. Additionally, an inclined stone block with one name from the Second World War is positioned against the west side of the base of the memorial.
