Description

Red House is a house that has been converted into a residential home for the elderly. It dates from the 18th century and has undergone significant changes in the 19th century, while also apparently incorporating a structure from the 17th century. The building features a variety of red bricks, including vitrified bricks from the 17th century and parts from the 18th century that display a chequerwork pattern using flared headers. It has a clay tile roof and consists of an 8-window range across 2 storeys and attics.

The left-hand two bays are mostly from the 19th century, while the right-hand bay is from the 17th century and has brick coping on the gable. The windows are sash style with glazing bars; the two left-hand bays have 19th-century windows, while the others are 18th-century with moulded flush frames and thicker glazing bars. The earlier part of the building features gauged brick flat arches above the windows. There are two 19th-century gables that rise above the eaves line over the second and fifth bays, each with a sash window. Additionally, there are two gabled dormers, also fitted with sashes. A brick band runs at the first floor level, and there is a 19th-century porch that includes pilasters, a cornice, and a pediment made of rubbed brick, leading to a four-panel door with side-lights. The building has a variety of ridge and gable end chimney stacks, and single-storey outbuildings extend from both ends.

Inside, the interior is rather plain but retains an 18th-century dog-leg staircase with turned balusters.
