Description
The South Gatepier of the pair adjacent to Lion Lodge is a Grade II* listed structure located in Woburn Park, dating from the mid to late 18th century. This gatepier, which stands approximately 3 metres tall, is constructed from ashlar stone and features a Coade stone statue on top. The lower two-thirds of the pier showcases vermiculated rustication, while the upper third consists of an entablature adorned with a Greek key band along the architrave. The frieze includes carved swags on the west and east sides, with paterae on the north and south sides, and is capped with a moulded cornice. The statue represents a recumbent lion, positioned to face north towards the road and the other gatepier.
