Description

Henlow Grange is a small country house, now converted into a health clinic. It dates from the mid-18th century and likely replaces an earlier building. The house is constructed of red brick with a chequerwork pattern made from vitrified headers and has hipped clay tile roofs. The layout is a double pile plan, featuring a main block of three storeys, a two-storey wing to the northwest, and a single-storey wing to the southeast, all set on a basement.

The front elevation faces southwest and is arranged in a 3:5:3 window pattern. All windows are sashes with glazing bars and wood valances, set under gauged brick flat arches. The main block has a central doorway accessed by a flight of stone steps. This doorway features a part-glazed door with a lugged surround and a heavy keystone. The porch is pedimented and supported by Ionic columns and pilasters. The main block also has projecting piers at the corners, each rising to a chimney stack with a moulded cornice. A brick band runs at first-floor level across all three blocks, with the central block showcasing a heavy moulded cornice that breaks forward around the corner piers. The left-hand block has a lightly moulded cornice, while the right-hand block features a plain parapet with recessed panels that align with the window spacing. There is a later addition to the right of the right-hand block, which also includes recessed panels that continue the window arrangements.

Inside, the ground floor retains many decorative features, including panelling in the library and hall, with the hall featuring broken pedimented door surrounds. The late 19th-century Peacock room is notable for its hand-painted Chinese wallpaper illustrating plants and birds, Rococo-style fireplaces, and fluted Ionic columns and pilasters framing the central archway. The staircase is adorned with spiral turned balusters and panelling.
