Description
This obelisk, located approximately 50 metres southeast of Southill Station, was erected in 1864 as a monument to William Henry Whitbread. It is a rather plain granite structure standing about 5 to 6 metres high, set on a plinth with two steps. The inscription on the east side of the plinth reads: "To William Henry Whitbread Esquire for his zeal and energy in promoting railways through the country of Bedford. 1864. Erected by public subscription." The obelisk is included in the heritage register for its socio-historical interest.
