Description
The Parish Church of St. Peter is a historic church made of coursed limestone rubble, featuring a chancel, nave, north chapel, south transept, north aisle, south porch, and a west tower topped with a broach spire. Some work from the 13th century may still be present in the nave, and the reused south doorway dates from the same period. Most of the remaining medieval features are from the 14th century. The nave has its original low-pitched roof, while the three-bay north arcade and north aisle were built in the 15th century. In the 1840s, a significant repair project was undertaken, during which the 14th-century chancel was altered and given a steeply pitched slate roof. The 15th-century south transept was remodeled but still retains its original windows and statue niches. A new roof was added to the north chapel, and a new vestry was constructed in 1847. The church is adorned with Jacobean carved panelling collected by local landowner Thomas Abbott Green around 1870, who gathered locally available carved timberwork as well as some Flemish pieces, which were used to create a western gallery and panelling.
