Description
77 and 79 High Street is a former post office built in the early 19th century, now serving as a shop. The building features a roof covered with Welsh slate and walls made of stuccoed red brick with stone columns.
It is roughly rectangular in shape and faces west towards High Street. The three-storey commercial building has a shallow-pitched slate roof. The front elevation has five bays, with the central three slightly projecting at the first and second floors. The stuccoed walls are topped with a projecting modillion cornice and entablature above six giant Corinthian half columns that span the first and second floors. A plain entablature separates the ground and first floors, while the ground floor shopfront is framed by six Tuscan half columns.
The windows are arranged in a pattern of 1:3:1, featuring casement windows set in architrave surrounds, with the second-floor windows having eared surrounds. The outer windows on the first floor have cornices on consoles, and the central window is topped with a triangular pediment on consoles. The outer bays and the central bay of the first floor include French doors with balconettes adorned with cast-iron anthemion decoration. The ground floor shopfront was refurbished around 2016, during which two Tuscan columns were reintroduced to the right of centre.
