Description
The Victoria Carpet Company is a carpet factory built in 1869 by T.D. Baker for William Green. It features blue brick with white Stourbridge brick dressings and a slate hipped roof. The building has an L-shaped front block that originally housed offices, showrooms, a winding room, and warehousing, with a wing extending to the rear northeast. The weaving sheds behind are not included in this listing.
Architecturally, the factory is designed in a classical style and stands three storeys tall. The northwest front is symmetrical, with a layout of 2:2:2:3:2:2:2 bays, where the wider central bay is topped with a pediment. The bays are separated by rusticated white brick pilasters and feature an enriched white brick cornice and stringcourses at each floor level, along with a moulded brick plinth. Each bay contains a pair of round-headed windows with white brick arches and imposts, fitted with multi-pane cast-iron window frames. The central opening on each floor of the central bay is a doorway, and above it, in the pediment, there is an oculus. To the left, a carriageway features a rolled steel joist, likely replacing an original arch.
Inside, the staircase has been removed, and the floors are supported by Phillips's patent wrought-iron girders. William Green, originally a coal merchant, began carpet making in 1859 and initially rented space at Stour Vale Mills before constructing this factory, which was then known as New Road Mills.
