Description

The retaining wall with sculptural relief in Kidderminster is a 320-meter long concrete structure built between 1972 and 1973. It was designed by J G Stewart in collaboration with Douglas H Smith, featuring decorative surface relief by William Mitchell.

Constructed from air-entrained concrete cast in situ, the wall uses full-height shuttering lined with decorative moulds. It runs along the east side of the A451, extending north to south alongside Hoo Road, between Comberton Hill and the Worcester Road junction. The wall averages eight meters in height, reaching approximately eleven meters at its highest point and tapering down to around two meters at either end.

The structure consists of multiple concrete panels with sculptural relief designs. Most panels have a deeply profiled surface finish that mimics a natural rock face, created from vertically arranged moulded sections about one meter wide. Interspersed along the wall are ten individually designed panels featuring a variety of textured relief designs that blend naturalistic forms with abstract and geometric details.

A landscaped border separates the wall from the pavement, which includes paved seating areas with benches, trees, and shrubs. Vegetation has grown over parts of the wall, especially at the northern end, obscuring a former waterfall panel that is believed to still be present.
