Description

Broome House is a country house dating to the late 18th century, with later 19th-century and mid-20th-century alterations. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar with hipped tile roofs. The south front has three storeys and a symmetrical arrangement, with the central section projecting slightly and topped by a pediment within a parapet; it has a 1 + 3 + 1 window arrangement. The windows are mostly glazing bar sashes, except for the central window, which is Venetian. The second floor has six-pane sashes, with a central Diocletian window. Ground floor windows are 2-light casements with semi-circular heads. The central entrance is defined by a semi-circular porch with Doric columns, a moulded cornice, and a flat roof, and features a blind fanlight above a two-leaf, half-glazed door. The east front is in a Gothick style, also three storeys, with three windows; the side bays project with crenellated parapets and pilasters, while the central bay has an ogee gable. The windows on the east front are three-light units; the outer lights have two-centred heads, and the central one has an ogee head. The second-floor windows are blind, consisting of two two-centred lights with an ogee label, and the central window is a quatrefoil. The ground floor central porch has a crenellated parapet and an ogee gable above a blocked doorway, and the windows have semi-circular heads. The house has recently been attributed to William and David Hiorn. It has stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
