Description
Hill Grove House at King Charles I High School is a substantial detached former house built around 1800 to 1820, with later additions from the mid-19th century. The building has two storeys and is constructed of red brick, featuring a symmetrical five-bay entrance where the central three bays are slightly advanced and topped with a pediment. It has a moulded stone cornice and parapet, along with a stone plinth. The hipped slate roof is complemented by plain brick chimney stacks.
The windows are revealed glazing bar sashes with thin stone cills, and they are adorned with slightly cambered reeded stone arches that include keystones. The central first-floor window features a cornice and entablature supported by console brackets, extending down to form a French casement that connects to the roof of a coupled Tuscan column porch. The entrance has double doors with glazed upper panels, and there are cast iron railings on the roof of the porch. Originally, the house had a depth of three bays on the north side with a lower service wing. The south side was later extended to seven bays in a similar style around 1860 to 1870, featuring plastered bow windows on the ground floor, with the central lights designed as marginal glazed French casements.
