Description
Areley Hall is a large house located in Stourport on Severn, originally part of a single dwelling with Muxlowe House. The building dates back to the late 16th century but underwent significant alterations around 1820 and 1870. It is primarily timber-framed, with some brick additions, and is roughcast rendered throughout. The main facade faces south and features two storeys with a three-storey porch. The front has four bays, with a narrow section added to the left in the late 19th century.
The doorway, which is not in its original position, is located to the right and features a carved and studded door topped with a round arched fanlight. This is situated one bay to the right of a projecting full-height gabled porch that displays exposed timbering in the gable apex and close studding with decorative braces above the lower rail. The porch is supported by 19th-century Doric columns that encase earlier supports, which also support a flat-roofed porch over the current doorway. The windows are casements with mullions and transoms, likely added around 1820, and are set beneath hoodmoulds. A large axial brick stack is positioned between the two left-hand units.
The rear elevation features three projecting gables of varying heights and periods. The outer two gables may be original, with the left-hand gable housing a staircase that is integral to the early timber-framed construction. However, all the windows on this side appear to be from the late 19th or early 20th century. There is a lower projecting wing to the left, which is likely partly from the 18th century but was extended by an additional bay in the early 20th century. Inside, the staircase and roof structure indicate that substantial parts of the original building remain, although fireplaces and other internal details are related to the 19th-century improvements.
