Description
The Areley Kings War Memorial is a First World War memorial designed by H.C. Corlette, unveiled on 1 September 1920, and later altered to include names from the Second World War.
Made of sandstone, the memorial features a Latin cross with splayed ends, standing about 1.3 meters high. The cross is positioned atop an octagonal column that has scrolling chamfers at the top. This column rests on a large square plinth, which is set on a two-stepped platform with slightly sloping steps. The plinth displays inscriptions and the names of 13 men who died in the First World War, as well as five men who lost their lives in the Second World War. The carved lettering in a Serif font on the plinth reads: "A PILLAR OF REMEMBRANCE/ OF THE MEN OF/ ARELEY KINGS/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918// (NAMES)// FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ 'WHO DIES IF ENGLAND LIVES'// (NAMES)."
The upper step of the platform also includes the dates 1939-1945 followed by the names of those commemorated.
