Description

This is a garden pavilion, dating from 1660-70, which has been later adapted into a house. It was built for Sir John Pakington as part of significant alterations to his grandfather’s hunting lodge, Westwood House. The building was restored in the early 20th century by Sir Reginald Blomfield and altered again in the mid-20th century. Constructed of red brick in English bond, with sandstone ashlar dressings, the design is largely free of classical influence, with the exception of a two-stage ogee cupola topped with a cut finial and covered in fishscale tiles. The building is square, with three storeys set on a chamfered plinth and features a moulded eaves cornice. Stone mullioned and transomed windows are present on the first floor, while the second floor has two-light mullioned windows. The main south-facing entrance has a studded door and a two-light mullioned window to the right. An inserted pair of doors has been added to the east elevation, while the west elevation features a 20th-century hipped roof, a single-storey extension, and a blocked first-floor window. The upper north-east corners are distinguished by bartizan stone chimneys with octagonal shafts. Originally, four garden pavilions, including this one, were linked to Westwood House and a gatehouse by low walls, creating a dramatic overall composition—as illustrated by Kip in approximately 1698. The two westernmost pavilions and all the connecting enclosures were removed during the 18th century.
